Content:

The course delves into a few thematic strains that contribute to the literary construction of the city at night, and how these representations are themselves structured through metaphorical means in textual and audiovisual media. The course will familiarize students with the cognitive theory of metaphor known as Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The course requires students to choose a relevant text (book, poem, film, etc.), one that deals significantly with the city at night, for analysis at the start of the course.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be:

  • Familiar with the central thematics of the city at night in literature.
  • Able to analyze conceptual and linguistic metaphors in both textual and visual media.

Timing: The course is held in the autumn term, during periods I and II. Target group: Intermediate-level students of English

1-5/FAIL

Assessment criteria:

The course utilizes a portfolio. During the course, participants are required to complete a small written assignment each week which are then compiled into the portfolio at the end of the course. The course utilizes a numerical grading scale 1–5. In the numerical scale zero stands for a fail.
