This course examines the historical background of Marxism and its primary theoretical outcomes. It explores crucial texts of Marxist and post-Marxist political philosophy with a focus on fundamental themes.
Marxism is sometimes considered to be a uniform, even outdated concept actualised in theories of post- or neo-Marxism. However, a closer insight uncovers that Marxism is far from a homogeneous theory with little to say about actuality. Contrarily, it is an idea transforming itself in a plurality of social movements, emancipatory currents, political programs, or even anthropological systems that rely on principal Marxist axioms, which have not lost their actuality. The course will identify these Marxist patterns throughout their development in various historical shapes. It scrutinises Marxism in terms of the history of ideas and follows – with philosophical and historical insights – Marxism from its historical preconditions through its development until its contemporary shapes.
