The basics are first set in terms of defining energy transition to a carbon neutral energy future. Further the integration of multiple energy networks will be explained, as well as network flows. The course focuses on a future vision and how to decarbonize the energy system by 2050 with the least environmental cost. Some key enabling technologies will be explained, such as electrification, power-to-gas storage and new market mechanisms. The role of consumers is emphasized as participants in smart energy communities and users of sharing economy. Finally, the sustainability of smart energy network will be explained.

There will be no exam, however, the students will need to complete learning tasks related to the lectures and complete a simulation exercise. The simulation exercise will be done as group work using the EnergyPlan freeware , for which in-class guidance will be provided. The results of the simulation will have to be presented. The learning task will be done as individual work.

The course will be realized as face-to-face teaching. The course will also have some participatory obligations. To complete the course, 75% of the learning tasks will have to be returned, as well as the exercise report.

Prerequisites: Completing Smart grids 1 course compulsory, Smart grids 2 is preferred but not compulsory
