    Learning outcomes

    After completing the course, the student will be able to:

    • understand their work as part of a bigger picture
    • describe purpose, objectives and measures for their work
    • search new methods and tools for improving the societal impact of their work
    • understand the difference between strategic and operational levels
    • understand the importance of collaboration in the development of new innovations


    Doctoral students are often involved in proposal writing or project planning where it is required to identify the societal need for the project and define measurable objectives for the work to be conducted. It is typical that objectives are too general – we aim to “improve” or “develop” something – and thus, it is difficult to measure success and report the work. In addition, it is required to fit these concrete objectives against strategic objectives set by the university or funding organisation. In order to create societal impact, it is important to identify the role of the work against other solutions to the problem, and identify necessary collaborators for its implementation. The course introduces students some basic tools for organising information about the societal problem and setting objectives and measures. The course contains a short introduction to these tools, group work and a written assignment. Students can bring their own ideas, project plans, proposals (with related call text) or reports to be analysed as part of the group work. The group work will be conducted in the context of behavior change technologies.

    We will be using Teams for video and audio connection and chat. For all activities and group work we will be using Miro-whiteboard:


    If you want to provide your own material for the course, you can add it already!

    • Miro works best with Chrome or Firefox browsers (see list below)
    • You don't need to login to Miro in order to be able to edit the board
    • When you login, hopefully you'll land to the welcome-frame of the course
    • When you select the arrow from the menu, you'll be able to select and modify elements, e.g. add post its
    • When you select the hand from the menu, you'll be able to move around without editing anything by accident
    • You can move the whiteboard by clicking the grey background and moving the mouse
    • If you edit something by accident, you can cancel by CTRL+Z
    • When you double click the post its, you can edit them
    • If the text is too small, try zooming with your mouse or touch pad

        Explore the topics that were introduced during the course. You can select one topic or several ones:

        • Systems map
        • IOOI-method (impact chain)
        • Setting goals and objectives, selecting measures
        • Theory of change
        • Contribution analysis
        • Logic models in behaviour change research
        Based on that, write a written assigment  in English or in Finnish that can be one of these:

        • Essay of the topic using relevant literature
        • Description and example how you would use them in your own work (e.g. to write a proposal, plan, report) (including the actual content i.e. systems map/impact chain/goals/objectives/measures)
        • Systems map -visualisation based on an existing report (e.g. by Valtioneuvoston kanslia, WHO, OECD, EU) with insights and potential intervention points
        • Introduction to other methods used in system thinking with examples (e.g. DOUBLE-Q DIAGRAM, BEHAVIOR OVER TIMEGRAPH, CAUSAL LOOP DIAGRAM)
        Essay should contain one page text or more. Other types should contain half a page text and visualisations with relevant content.

        It is important that you demonstrate your own learning process instead of repeating the literature.

        Deadline is 6.5.2021. Returning possibility will be added to this workspace.
