
Learning outcomes:
Upon completing the course, students are able to:
- Identify and critically analyze own preconceptions about migrants and integration processes
- Compare and evaluate migrant integration practices
- Relate theoretical discussions on diversity and integration to practical professional contexts
- Engage and actively participate in civil society organizations
- Support the development of positive workplace and community practices
Contents:
Theoretical knowledge
- Basic concepts of migration studies
- Basic theoretical and practical knowledge about integration
- Legal and social frameworks for asylum seeker reception
Field practice
- Field practice in groups at a reception center
- Collaboration with reception center staff and other actors
- Implementation and evaluation of integration activities developed during the course
Learning activities and teaching methods:
Face-to-face teaching, individual/group work and students presentations and activities, and written work (volunteer work plan & reflective diary).
Field practice: Planning and executing visits to Heikinharju reception center or to civil society organizations working with asylum seekers, refugees and/or immigrants.
Assessment methods and criteria:
Assessment is based on learning outcomes of the course.
Grading:
