‘Empirical research in Acc., Econ., and Fin.’
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student understands the nature of empirical research and is able to write a literature review of a specified topic. The students are introduced to current research topics in economics, accounting, and finance and the availability of empirical databases for research. The student can conduct basic empirical analyses of data using Excel, RStudio, and SAS. Additionally, students will be briefly introduced to EViews. Students are also able to express their ideas analytically and effectively in written form.
Contents
The nature of empirical research, writing of a literature review, writing of a research report, current research topics in economics, accounting and finance, important databases, Excel modeling, and Using programming software for analysis such as R, SAS, or EViews.
Lectures will be held online due to the covid situation.
Completing the course
The required minimum participation rate is 6/12 lectures such that both lectures on current issues in a particular field (economics, accounting, or finance) must be attended. Attendance will be recorded online.
1) The literature review, Introduction to databases, and summary of 5 research articles of student’s choice (Around 2 paragraphs each to talk about data, methods, research question, and contribution. Mention whether your selected articles are from accounting, finance, or economics). Return by Sunday 30.01.2022.
2) Excel assignment. Return by Wed 22.12.2021.
3) Assignment for empirical exercise using programming software. Return by Sunday 09.01.2022.
If a student fails to return an assignment by the deadline, S/he fails the course.
Evaluation criteria: Above three assignments are individual and are weighted as:
• Assignment 1 (40% marks)
• Assignment 2 (25% marks)
• Assignment 3 (25% marks)
• Class participation via informal presentations (10% marks)
