Descartes’s Meditations on First Philosophy (Meditationes de prima philosophia) is one of the most influential works in the history of Western philosophy and proposes to addresses some of the most fundamental issues in philosophy: What am I? How am I related to my body? What can I know? Does God exist? What is free will? This class will engage with Descartes’s treatment of these issues through a close reading of the Meditations as well as selections from Descartes’s replies to objections from other philosophers and theologians.
