Course: Research methods, 3 ECTS, HIKUVIE, Faculty of Humanities

The course provides students the basic skills to conduct a qualitative research project with an emphasis on different tools needed for analyzing the data and presenting their results. Topics to examine and discuss include reflections on methods and methodology concepts, on the different scientific approaches, and on the different stages of a research project.
The course is designed for first- and second-year students from Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, History and Communication.

Learning outcomes:
Upon completion of the course the students will be familiarized with the qualitative methods used in history, culture and communication. They will:
- have a better understanding on what methodology and methods to adopt for their Bachelor thesis
- know the basis for planning and implementing a research project (defining a problem, stating research questions, searching for adequate literature, data collection and analysis with a special focus on interviews and surveys, writing and presenting the results)
- be able to use different kind of software as:
• RefWorks for importing references and creating a bibliography
• NVivo for conducting a content analysis (interviews, peer-reviewed articles etc.)
• Excel for transferring and analyzing survey data
• Word for structuring and formatting the project results
• PowerPoint for visually presenting the project results

For completing the course, the students will have to:
1) pass an exam on each software studied during the course (50% of the final grade)
2) conduct a small-scale project by pair. This includes to create a NVivo project, write a report and have a short oral presentation of their results (50% of the final grade)
