Upon completion of the course students should: (1) know the basic mechanical properties of rock; (2) be able to make stress or strain analysis to a rock sample and a rock structure; (3) be able to analyse rock failure under compression, shear and tension loads; (4) know which factors influence rock failure or fracture and know how those affect rock fracture; (5) know the basic principles and methods for rock destruction and rock support.

Contents: The course will: (1) introduce basic properties and characteristics of rock and rock mass; (2) introduce stress analysis method; (3) present basic theory on rock failure or fracture; (4) introduce basic methods for measuring rock strengths (compressive, shear and tensile) in laboratory; (5) introduce static and dynamic rock testing methods; (6) introduce methods for measuring in-situ stresses; (7) introduce methods for rock support.
