This course will discuss contemporary working life and discourse at work (spoken, textual, multimodal, online) and cover different approaches and research areas in the study of professional discourse as well as key conceptual and methodological frameworks, including ethnographic, sociolinguistic and discourse analytic approaches. Topics covered include institutional interaction, technology-supported work, online discourse, English as corporate language and English as a business lingua franca.

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to
• display an understanding of the main approaches, concepts and methods in the study of professional discourse in various working life contexts
• discuss and differentiate key theoretical and conceptual frameworks in the study of professional discourse
• apply appropriate concepts and methods in analyzing professional discourse in selected working life settings
• reflect on how they may use such tools in their future work
